Drum and Bass for the Underground

Drum And Bass for the Underground

As music junkies we all have a certain style or genre that we naturally lean towards. While this is totally acceptable, we would like to encourage others to get familiar, branch out, and find new sounds to fall in love with. This is what keeps your music senses tingling and craving for more.

The Deep End crew has a broad style of music taste that we all appreciate and share with each other. This is why we’re stoked to talk to Brandon Garva with SD Union and ask him a few questions that would help us get a feel for the drum and bass scene.

1. Who would you say is the most anticipated artist on the lineup?

This is a tough question due to the fact that there are so many incredibly talented artists on the lineup. Personally, I feel it is a tie between Friction and Makoto. Both artists are pioneers in the world of drum and bass, and are known for always coming through with killer dubs and sick mixing. Although they have difference styles, they are equally exciting and equally talented.

Friction is going to bring the heat on Saturday night, and Makoto is going to finish off WCW with proper liquid vibes that are sure to have everyone in the venue moving. Either way, I am so stoked to see them both in one weekend!

2.When at WCW, what sort of energy can we expect for those of us who have never been to a DnB show ?

San Diego drum and bass has a beautiful scene. Our fans are humble, friendly, and passionate about their music. For the most part, everyone leaves their ego at the door and just wants to have a good time while getting down to great music.
You can expect nothing but solid vibes on the dance floor. As far as the performers go, you are going to have a variety of styles throughout the event. You will hear mellow and melodic drum and bass, liquid dancefloor, jump up, as well as some heavier tracks with intense basslines. We wanted an eclectic lineup that would showcase all the styles of drum and bass that people want to hear. No matter what type of energy you prefer to get down to, it will be at WCW!

3.How would you respond when an outsider says “DnB is Dead”, or what keeps DnB relevant ?

I personally feel that dnb is stronger than ever. If you listen closely, you will hear drum and bass more and more in movies, radio commercials, TV shows, video games and mainstream music. On top of that, the amount of drum and bass fans around the world are growing stronger by the day! When I first went out to shows, the dnb room was always the small side room with not more than a few hundred people in it (if you were lucky). Nowadays, there are thousands of people packing out dnb rooms around the globe. It’s extremely satisfying to see our genre grow, and I think a lot of it comes down to the energy you feel from the artists as well as the fans. You can see and feel the passion across the board when you step out on to the dance floor, it’s hard to not want to dance when you get around that kind of energy. I think another factor that is helping with the progression of dnb is seeing major dnb artists collaborating with and remixing tracks from artists in other genres, and vice-versa.

4. What are 5 songs that you believe give a true representation of the WCW DnB lineup?

Good question! There are so many songs that represent the vibes you will get at WCW, but off the top of my head these are my top 5 in no particular order…

1. The Fugees – Ready or Not (Aphrodite Remix)

2. Michael Jackson – Human Nature (Makoto Remix)

3. Ben Soundscape & Superior Selectionz – Tribute

4. MK – Always (Feat. Alana)(Friction Remix)

5. Quadrant, Kid Hops & Iris – Eternal September (Feat. Collette Warren)

5. Why do you think all of the local organizers for WCW (Art of Sound, United by Bass, The Deep End, etc..) coming together will make a successful event ?

We at United By Bass are honored to have joined forces with SoulOnBeat, Deep End and I’ll House You for this production. Each organization involved has 10+ years of experience producing quality events in their respective genres, not to mention the passion we all share for our love of the scene and what we do for it. Everyone involved has been working their hardest to make WCW an event that has something for everyone, and the hard work is paying off. Tickets are selling fast and we are receiving a lot of feedback about how excited people are for this, not to mention how excited we are on the back end. We know what San Diego is in for. Trust me when I say it will be something you will not want to miss! 🙂

Damn Brandon, thanks for the feels, we dig your passion. We can’t wait to dance to some fast break beats at the West Coast Weekender.

Love,
